The Faroe Islands in 3 or 4 days: a day-by-day itinerary
A 3 or 4 day itinerary around the Faroe Islands by car: the lake above the ocean, Gásadalur, Tórshavn, Gjógv, Saksun and, with one more day, Kallur lighthouse.

A short but full trip, based in Tórshavn with a hire car. You can change the order of the days depending on the weather: save the places where the view is the point for the clearest day.
Day 1: Vágar, the airport island
Make the most of your arrival day, because the best of Vágar is minutes from the airport.
- The lake above the ocean: the hike to Trælanípa, about 45 minutes each way and a 200 DKK fee. See the guide.
- Gásadalur and the Múlafossur waterfall, about 15 minutes from the airport. See the guide.
- In the afternoon, on to Tórshavn through the Vágar subsea tunnel.
Day 2: Tórshavn and Kirkjubøur
- Tinganes, the old quarter and Skansin in the morning. See the Tórshavn guide.
- Kirkjubøur, the medieval village a short drive from the capital, in the afternoon.
- If you have time left, the National Museum.
Day 3: Eysturoy and northern Streymoy
- Gjógv and its gorge. See the guide.
- On the way, the road between Eiði and Gjógv passes Slættaratindur, the highest mountain.
- Saksun and its lagoon, in northwestern Streymoy. See the guide.
Day 4 (optional): the north or the sea
Choose one depending on the weather:
- Kallur lighthouse: to Klaksvík, the ferry to Kalsoy and the hike from Trøllanes. It takes up most of the day. See the guide.
- A boat trip to the Vestmanna cliffs, about 2 hours. See boat trips.
If your flight home leaves late, save something near the airport for the morning of your last day.
Frequently asked questions
Are 3 days enough in the Faroe Islands?
For the essentials, yes: Vágar, Tórshavn and the north of Streymoy and Eysturoy. With 4 days you add Kallur lighthouse or a boat trip, and you have some room if one day the weather is bad.
Where should you stay on a 3 or 4 day trip?
In Tórshavn every night. It is at the centre of the road network and from there you can reach everything in a day.
