What to pack for the Faroe Islands: the packing list
The packing list for the Faroe Islands in any season: layers, waterproofs, boots, what you need for hiking and the little things people forget.

In the Faroe Islands the weather changes in minutes and you can have all four seasons in a single day. The golden rule: thin layers underneath and a waterproof, windproof layer on top, at any time of year.
Clothing
- Waterproof and windproof jacket and trousers. Essential.
- Base layers, thermal or wool.
- A wool jumper or fleece, which keeps you warm and breathes.
- Hat, gloves and scarf, in summer too.
- Avoid jeans: when they get wet, they are heavy and do not dry.
Footwear
- Waterproof hiking boots with a good sole and ankle support.
- Thick wool socks, which keep your feet warm and dry.
For hiking
- Food, water and a map.
- A fully charged phone and a power bank: in the hills the signal can drop out.
- For long hikes: compass, head torch and whistle.
- The Safe Travel safety sheet filled in with your route, left in the car or at your accommodation. We explain it in hiking safely.
Practical things
- A small daypack.
- A reusable bottle: the tap water is very clean.
- Adapter: the sockets are type E/F at 230 V (the same as in most of mainland Europe).
- Swimwear: for a dip in the sea or in hot tubs and spas.
- Sunglasses and sun cream: by the sea, the sun can be strong.
- Earplugs and a sleep mask: in summer it hardly gets dark.
Best left at home
Your drone. The rules are strict and birds can abandon their nests because of the noise. We explain it in hiking safely.
And if you are short of something warm, take the chance to buy a Faroese wool jumper, hat or scarf there: they really keep you warm and make the best souvenir of the trip.
Frequently asked questions
What clothes should you bring to the Faroe Islands in summer?
The same approach as in winter, with fewer layers: a waterproof and windproof jacket and trousers, wool or fleece layers, a hat and gloves. It can be cold and rainy in summer too.
Can you go in trainers?
For walking around the villages, yes. For hiking in the hills, waterproof boots with a good sole and ankle support are better: the ground is usually wet and slippery.
Do you need a plug adapter?
The sockets are European (type E/F) at 230 V. If you come from mainland Europe you do not need an adapter; from the UK, the Americas and many other places, you do.
