Tjørnuvík: black sand, surfing and the Risin and Kellingin sea stacks
Tjørnuvík, in northern Streymoy, has a black sand beach, one of the few surf spots in the country and the best view of the Risin and Kellingin sea stacks.

Tjørnuvík is the northernmost village on Streymoy, wedged between mountains on three sides and open to the sea on the fourth. It is one of the most visited villages in the country, and with good reason.
What to see and do
- The black sand beach, volcanic, which shines like a mirror after rain or at low tide.
- Risin and Kellingin: from the beach you look straight at these two sea stacks across the fjord, linked to a Faroese legend about a giant and a witch.
- Surfing: it is one of the few places in the Faroe Islands where you can surf. The water is cold all year round: a thick wetsuit is essential.
- Hiking: the old path to Saksun, one of the island’s classic routes, starts here.
How to get there
- By car: on a narrow road from Haldórsvík. Drive slowly and use the passing places.
- No motorhomes: Tjørnuvík is one of the villages where they are not allowed.
- By bus: there is a route from Tórshavn, with few departures a day. Check timetables at ssl.fo.
