Entry requirements for the Faroe Islands: documents and visas
Which document you need to enter the Faroe Islands, whether you are an EU citizen or travelling from elsewhere. The Faroes are not in Schengen: this is what changes.

The Faroe Islands belong to the Kingdom of Denmark, but they are not part of the European Union or the Schengen area. That changes a few things about entering, especially if you travel on a visa.
If you are a citizen of an EU country
You can enter with a passport or your national identity card with a photo, without a visa. You must be a citizen of one of those countries: being a resident is not enough.
If you travel from outside the EU
Denmark sets the general rule:
- If you can enter Denmark without a visa, you can also enter the Faroe Islands without a visa. This is what the Danish Immigration Service states.
- You need a passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date.
- If your nationality requires a visa, you apply at the Danish embassy or consulate in your country of residence, and it must be specific to the Faroe Islands.
If you have a Schengen visa or residence in Denmark
- A Schengen visa is not valid for entering the Faroe Islands, unless it says “valid for the Faroe Islands”.
- Residence in Denmark is not enough either: if your nationality requires a visa, you need one for the Faroes.
When connecting in Europe
Most trips from outside Europe connect in Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Reykjavík or another European city. When you leave and re-enter the Schengen area you may go through border control, and since October 2025 the Entry/Exit System (EES) has applied, recording the fingerprints and photo of travellers from outside the EU. Get to the airport in good time.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter the Faroe Islands with an EU national ID card?
Yes. Citizens of the EU and the Schengen area can enter with a passport or a national identity card with a photo. You must be a citizen: being a resident of an EU country is not enough.
Do I need a visa for the Faroe Islands?
According to the Danish Immigration Service, anyone who can enter Denmark without a visa can also enter the Faroe Islands without a visa. Check that your nationality is on the official Danish list of visa-exempt countries before you buy your flight.
Is my Schengen visa valid for the Faroe Islands?
No. The Faroe Islands are not part of the Schengen area. If you need a visa, it must state explicitly that it is valid for the Faroe Islands.
Is there passport control when arriving from Copenhagen?
You may go through checks when leaving or entering the Schengen area, because the Faroes are outside it. Since October 2025 the EU has applied the Entry/Exit System (EES), which records the fingerprints and photo of non-EU travellers.
