Entrance to a paid hiking trail in the Faroe Islands

In the Faroe Islands almost all land is private: sheep pastures with centuries of family history. That is why several of the most famous trails have a mandatory fee charged by the landowners. Most of the country can be walked for free, but if your plan includes Kallur, the lake above the ocean or Mykines, you need to budget for it.

Tips to avoid surprises

  • Bring a card, and some cash for Villingardalsfjall. At Kallur and Trælanípa you pay by card; at Villingardalsfjall you leave the fee in a box by the gate.
  • Book Mykines and Drangarnir in advance. Places are limited and depend on the weather. On Mykines the fee drops from 500 to 400 DKK if you book online.
  • The guide is not always included. At Kallur, Trælanípa (basic price) and Villingardalsfjall you walk on your own. At Drangarnir and Mykines a guide is mandatory.
  • Respect closures. The path to the Mykines lighthouse is closed because of the risk of landslides. It is not a suggestion: it is dangerous.

Frequently asked questions

Why do you have to pay to hike in the Faroe Islands?

Many trails cross private grazing land. Some landowners charge a mandatory fee to maintain the path and limit the number of visitors at the most popular places.

How much does the lake above the ocean hike (Trælanípa) cost?

200 DKK per adult without a guide. With a guide it is 450 DKK, and children aged 7 to 14 pay 150 DKK. Children under 7 go free.

No. Drangarnir can only be visited with a guide and costs 600 DKK per person. There are departures on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays between April and October.

Can you visit the Mykines lighthouse?

The path to the Mykines lighthouse is closed because of a landslide and there is a risk of more. The rest of the island can be visited with the mandatory guide in season.
