Trail marked with stone cairns on a green hillside

Hiking in the Faroe Islands

Trails, fees, safety and the best time to hike in the Faroe Islands. What you need to know before heading into the hills.

Walking is the best way to get to know the Faroe Islands. Many trails follow the old paths between villages, marked with stone cairns, and others lead to cliffs and lighthouses.

Before you set off

  • The best time to hike is from late May to early September, when the trails are most accessible and there are more guided hikes.
  • The weather changes in minutes. Faroese people say you can have all four seasons in one day. Check vedur.fo before you go.
  • Some trails charge a fee. The land is private, and at the most visited places the landowners charge to cross it. See the hiking fees.
  • In winter and early spring, choose short, easy trails or go with a guide.
