Suðuroy, the southern island of the Faroes
Suðuroy is the southernmost island of the Faroes, two hours by ferry from Tórshavn. What to see: Sumba, Akraberg lighthouse, Beinisvørð and Hvannhagi.

Suðuroy is the southernmost island of the Faroes and one of the least visited. You get there by ferry from Tórshavn, which is why it needs a little more time than the rest of the archipelago.
How to get there
- SSL ferry from Tórshavn to Tvøroyri: a crossing of about two hours. It takes cars.
- Check the timetable on ssl.fo before booking accommodation: the first ferry leaves Tórshavn in the morning.
- Visit Faroe Islands recommends spending at least two days on the island.
If you are travelling without a car, the ferry is included in the tourist travel card.
What to see
Sumba and Akraberg lighthouse
From Tvøroyri, the road heads south to Sumba, the southernmost village in the Faroe Islands, with its colourful houses. Beyond it is Akraberg lighthouse, facing the open Atlantic.
Beinisvørð
At the top of the mountain pass, a very steep climb up to Beinisvørð gives one of the best views on the island. It is a very exposed spot: the wind blows hard. To return, Visit Faroe Islands suggests the mountain pass instead of the tunnel.
Hvannhagi
A protected lake below a great rock wall, in the north of the island. You can walk there from Tvøroyri in about two hours.
Ásmundarstakkur and the west coast
A lone sea stack off the west coast, near Sandvík. A stony path climbs towards the cliffs, a good area for birdwatching. Best viewed from a distance.
