There is no bad time to visit the Faroe Islands, but there is a better time for each kind of trip. The only certainty is that the weather changes quickly in any month: always bring waterproof clothing.
Summer (May to September): the main season
This is the best time for most travellers. The days are very long, the landscape is at its greenest and boats and guided hikes run more often. It is also puffin season on Mykines and festival season.
- For hiking: late May to early September.
- For Mykines: the fee with a mandatory guide applies from 1 May to 31 August, in the middle of the bird season.
Spring and autumn: fewer people
April and May, and September and October, have fewer visitors. In spring the landscape turns green again; in autumn the colours become warmer. In return, some trips have fewer departures.
Winter (December to February): calm and short days
The days are short and the mountains are often covered in snow, even if there is little in the villages. There can be snowstorms and wind until March, April or even May. It is the time of heimablídni, dinners in the homes of Faroese families, and of quiet villages.
In winter, check road conditions before you set off: the main roads are cleared, but some villages can be cut off by snow.
