The Risin og Kellingin sea stacks off the coast of Eysturoy

Eiði is at the northern tip of Eysturoy. It is the starting point for the highest mountain in the country and for the most famous sea stacks in the islands.

Slættaratindur, the roof of the Faroes

At 880 metres, Slættaratindur is the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands. On a clear day, you can see all 18 islands from the summit. The winding mountain road between Eiði and Gjógv is, for Visit Faroe Islands, possibly the most beautiful drive in the country.

Eiðiskollur and Risin og Kellingin

Next to the Eiðiskollur headland, north of the village, two sea stacks rise from the sea: Risin og Kellingin, the giant and the witch. Legend has it that they came from Iceland to steal the Faroe Islands, tied a rope to Eiðiskollur and, because they dawdled too long, the dawn turned them to stone.

You can see them from the edge of the headland, a little over an hour’s walk from Eiði, and also from Tjørnuvík, on the other side of the strait. The cliffs are sheer: do not go near the edge.

In the village

  • Camping Eiði: room for 60 motorhomes and 10 tents.
  • Boat and fishing trips from the harbour.

How to get there

From Tórshavn through the Eysturoy subsea tunnel, with a toll. Combine it with Gjógv on the same day.
