Internet and mobile in the Faroe Islands: roaming, eSIM and SIM cards

The Faroe Islands are not in the EU, so European roaming does not always apply. How to avoid surprises: check your plan, get an eSIM or a local SIM card.

The Faroe Islands have very good coverage, with 4G and 5G across the country. The problem is not the signal but the price: as they are not part of the European Union, the EU roam-like-at-home rule does not apply automatically.

Your three options

1. Your current plan

Only if your operator includes the Faroe Islands at a good price. If you are not sure, turn off data roaming until you have checked.

2. A data eSIM

The easiest option if your phone is compatible: you buy it online before you leave and it activates when you arrive, without changing your SIM card. Airalo, for example, has eSIMs for the Faroe Islands that use the Føroya Tele network.

3. A local prepaid SIM card

The country’s two operators, Føroya Tele and Nema, sell prepaid cards in phone shops, kiosks, petrol stations, post offices, hotels, information centres and at Vágar airport.

Wi-Fi

There is Wi-Fi in hotels, regional information centres, libraries and some cafés.

Useful numbers

  • Emergencies: 112.
  • Faroe Islands country code: +298, followed by a 6-digit number.
  • To call abroad: 00 + country code + number.
