If you drive around the Faroe Islands, you will cross under the sea several times. There are four subsea toll tunnels and they all work the same way: there is no booth or barrier, a camera reads the number plate and payment comes later.

You cross the first one as soon as you land: the Vágatunnilin links Vágar Airport with Streymoy, the island where Tórshavn is.

How the toll is paid

  • There are no booths. A camera photographs the number plate as you pass.
  • Rental car: you pay the rental company, which may apply its own rate.
  • Private car: you pay online before, or up to 6 days after, crossing. Otherwise an invoice arrives with a 50 DKK surcharge.
  • Short stays with your own car (for example, if you arrive by ferry from Denmark): you can register the number plate and a card for automatic payment during your dates.
  • Mountain tunnels are free. Only the subsea ones charge.

How much you will spend on tolls

It depends on your route. A typical trip based in Tórshavn usually includes:

  1. Vágatunnilin, return (arriving and leaving via the airport): 100 DKK in a rental car.
  2. Eysturoyartunnilin, return (a trip to Gjógv or Eiði): 2 × 175 DKK = 350 DKK.
  3. Norðoyatunnilin, return (Klaksvík and Kallur lighthouse): 100 DKK.

In that example it comes to about 550 DKK (≈ €74), plus any margin the rental company adds. If you add Sandoy, add 2 × 175 DKK.

The roundabout under the sea

The Eysturoyartunnilin links Streymoy with Eysturoy and has a roundabout inside it, under the seabed, lit up with an art installation. It is one of the most photographed places in the country, even though it is inside a tunnel: do not stop on the road to take photos.
