  • The mid-range and comfortable levels include a small car, about 100 km a day and an average for tolls. A day without crossing subsea tunnels costs less.
  • If you travel in summer, accommodation can cost quite a lot more than these figures. Book early.

Where the money goes

Accommodation

This is the most variable item. A hostel or simple guesthouse costs about 400 DKK a night, a mid-range hotel or an apartment usually starts at about 800 DKK, and 4-star hotels in Tórshavn in high season appear on booking sites at €210 to €250 a night. Outside July and August there is more room for manoeuvre. You will find the areas and options in where to stay.

Food

A coffee costs about 30 to 35 DKK, a simple sandwich about 55 DKK and a casual meal between 150 and 300 DKK per person. Buying at the supermarket and booking one or two good restaurants is the usual way to keep spending down.

Car, fuel and tolls

  • Hire: small cars cost from about 500 to 850 DKK a day depending on the season and the company, excluding fuel and tolls.
  • Fuel: petrol was about 14.85 DKK per litre in September 2026. Faroese pumps have no fixed price and it changes often.
  • Tolls: the subsea tunnels charge by camera. See the official rates and the cost of a typical route.

Public transport

The SSL 7-day tourist card costs 700 DKK for adults and is valid on buses and ferries, except the Mykines ferry. The airport bus to Tórshavn (route 300) costs about 75 to 100 DKK per person depending on the source.

Activities

Many of the best things are free: villages, viewpoints and hikes. Some trails charge a fee and others require a guide, such as Mykines. Check the hiking fees before adding up excursions.

How to spend less

  • Travel in May or September. According to the guides, accommodation is 20 to 30% cheaper outside high summer.
  • Book accommodation and car months ahead. There are few places and prices rise close to the date.
  • Cook or buy from the supermarket for at least one meal a day.
  • Consider not hiring a car if you stay in Tórshavn and the surrounding area.
  • Share a car and a room. The cost per person drops a lot with a group of three or four.

Exchange rate

The budget is in Danish kroner (DKK), with the equivalent in euros and dollars at the rate of 15 October 2026. Check the rate before you travel, because it varies.
