The Faroe Islands without a car: buses, ferries and the tourist card
How to get around the Faroe Islands without a car: blue buses, ferries between the islands, the 4 or 7-day tourist card and which places it does not cover.

You can travel around much of the Faroe Islands without a car, using the public buses and ferries run by SSL (Strandfaraskip Landsins). It takes more planning, because many routes have few departures a day, but they reach even very popular places.
Buses
- The big blue buses link the airport, Tórshavn and the larger villages. Smaller buses run to the quieter destinations.
- Route 300 links Tórshavn with Vágar airport and Sørvágur, and it is the one you need when you arrive.
- Most buses take bicycles.
- Tórshavn has a city bus, which also goes to the historic village of Kirkjubøur.
Ferries between the islands
SSL also runs the public ferries, for example:
- Tórshavn - Suðuroy: a crossing of about two hours on the Smyril ferry.
- Klaksvík - Kalsoy: the ferry you need to reach Kallur lighthouse.
The tourist travel card
For tourists, SSL sells a 4 or 7-day card with unlimited travel on its buses and ferries:
| Card | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|
| 4 days | 500 DKK | 250 DKK |
| 7 days | 700 DKK | 350 DKK |
- You can buy it at the Tórshavn ferry terminal, at the information centre at Vágar airport and on route 300.
- It does not include the ferry to Mykines (route 36), reserved seats, vehicles or some special trips.
- There is no refund if you do not use it.
Helicopter
There are subsidised helicopters to the remote islands, but they are intended mainly for residents. Tourists can only buy one-way tickets, which open two days before the flight, and return by ferry or bus.
Timetables
Always check the timetables on ssl.fo before you set off: many villages have few departures a day and missing the last bus can leave you with no way back.
